Author Putu Oka Sukanta. Translator: Keith Foulcher

Putu Oka Sukanta is one of many victims of the cruelty perpetrated by the New Order half a century ago. Yet of all the victims and survivors of that time, only a few have succeeded in sharing their personal and literary narratives with Putu Oka’s consistency and courage. His ability to make peace with the past has given him the means to shine a clear and penetrating light on the challenges and opportunities Indonesia faces in its search for a better future. It is these qualities that make his latest work so captivating.

Description

Putu’s body of work includes children’s books, three collections of poetry, and two volumes of short stories. He makes his living as an acupuncturist and has, over the years, worked boldly on behalf of Indonesia’s underclass: former political prisoners, people with AIDS, battered women, sex workers, and others. In 2012 he was named one of the recipients of a Hellmann-Hammett Award, an award bestowed by Human Rights Watch to writers for their commitment to free expression and the courage they showed when facing political persecution.
