Mona Sylviana was born in 1972 in Bandung and holds a degree in Communications. Her stories have been published in numerous papers and journals and in several anthologies as well. Since 2000, she has been active in the Nalar Jatinangor Institute, an organization that provides multicultural education through discussions, seminars, libraries, and training.

Toni Pollard has been a teacher of Indonesian in Australia for over 45 years, both at high school and university level. A NAATI qualified translator of Indonesian to English since 1993 with considerable experience in translation across many fields, she took up literary translation after her retirement from the University of Western Sydney at the end of 2004. Her previous translations include three novels, Above the Day, Below the Night by Putu Oka Sukanta, Mirah of Banda by Hanna Rambe and Departures by Nh Dini. Since 2008 she has translated many short stories, articles and essays for the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival’s bilingual publication of the works of young Indonesian writers attending the annual event.

Thomas Zschocke holds a Master’s degree in Indonesian studies from the University of Cologne, Germany (1994), as well as a doctoral degree in international education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA (2002). Throughout his career with the United Nations and other international organizations he has been involved in various project assignments in Indonesia. Most recently, he managed the academic program of a joint German-Indonesian research and development project with the United Nations University.
