Wakul is an acronym that derives from the term Wayang Kulit Luk-luk, which is a type of Balinese shadow puppet play performed on a truck stage that can be closed and opened. It is exclusively performed by a group from the village of Lukluk (in Badung Regency). It is the invention of a traveling puppeteer named I Ketut Rupik of the 1960s. The length of each show is approximately thirty minutes. Because it is very popular in Denpasar, they often do more than one show a day. The structure of the performance is very straightforward: overture, opening, the core story of two kingdoms at war in which each king is accompanied by knights, the battle, and the ending.
Wakul is also influenced by television and the print media, and often slips actual contemporary issues into the stories.
Meanwhile the music uses gamelan troupes called the Batel Gamelan whose repertoires include up tempo music appropriate for battle scenes.
