Mamanda is a form of traditional theater in South Borneo (Banjar Community) and East Borneo (Kutai Community). Mamanda theater uses a prosenium stage with realistic stage settings, such as the courts of kings, forests and beaches, and so on.
The stories, adcapted to embrace current social issues, are based on the folklore of “One Thousand and One Nights” and “Sahibul Hikayat”, which originate from the Middle East. The dialogues in the performances mix the Malay and Indonesian languages. Scene transitions are marked by the musical accompaniment of violins, drums, gongs, gambus and accordeons. Sometimes the actors also sing. Usually the ensemble group has one female singer. In certain scenes, dances are carried out by the male and female performers.
