Diskusi / Discussion

Menulis Perempuan dari Dua Sisi / Women from Two Points of View

Pembicara / Speakers: Erni Aladjai, Nukila Amal, Seno Gumira Ajidarma

Moderator: Melani Budianta

Jumat / Friday, 13 November 2020, 10:30-11:30 WIB / WIT

The history of modern Indonesian literature cannot ignore the significant role that women have played in its development. In a field once dominated by males, they have introduced themes distinctively “female” in their subject and point of view? What are the differences between female characters created by women and those created by men? What have these authors done through their work to upset or subvert the country’s patriarchal structure? Has their work served to enlighten and empower women today?

Much of the work of Gerson Poyk (1931–2017), who hailed from the island of Roté, examines the daily lives of people in rural Indonesia but he wrote about urban dwellers as well and his work has served to inspire numerous young authors throughout the country. Azhari Aiyub is an Acehnese author who revives past eras of Aceh in his post-modern work. Dewi Kharisma Michellia, who was born in Bali, write about an imaginary world which may seem far yet is close to us.

Yang Muda, Yang Berjaya / The Young and the Bold

Pembicara /Speakers: Sabda Armandio Alif, Ziggy Zezsyazeoviennazabrizkie, Dea Anugrah

In Indonesia’s literary world today, young authors are the new champions, enthusiastically competing and seeking to produce an amazing array of mind-tickling work but in a country where a writing career is undervalued are they finding the recognition and appreciation they deserve? How did they attain their writing skills and, in this digital era, what are they doing to get their voices heard. Do they plum the cultural richness of Indonesia in their work or are they more focused on global issues and international attention?

Kita dengarkan pandangan Annabel Teh Gallop.

The Lontar Foundation recently published Malay Seals from the Islamic World of Southeast Asia, a landmark work by British scholar, by Annabel Teh Gallop. Film OTR / On the Record Film: Refleksi Kehidupan/Life’s Reflection (Umar Kayam)karya /directed by Eddy Pras

Film Pendek / Short Films: Avianti Armand, Ben Sohib

Jumat / Friday, 13November 2020, 16:00-17:00 WIB / WIT

Umar Kayam (1932–2002) was an Indonesian man of letters who took a sociological and historical approach in his writing of fiction. That said, he was also flexible enough to go back and forth between the modern and the traditional, and between idiomatic and plain speech. Avianti Armand and Ben Sohib, two of Indonesia most talented authors, have taken a different route though some of Kayam’s influence might have rubbed off on them as is evident in the local and global color in their respective literary work.
