Bagaimana mulanya mereka mengenal Indonesia? Bagaimana kemudian muncul kecintaan pada Indonesia? Bagaimana mereka membandingkan Indonesia dengan negeri kelahiran mereka? Bagaimana mereka menyiasati bias stereotipe pandangan Barat terhadap Timur?
Each of these authors has written books that are set in Indonesia. How did that come to be? Did they live or worked here? Might they have fallen in love (or despair) with the land and its people? What is it that they are saying about Indonesia that is not being said by Indonesian themselves? Their remarks and answers to these and other questions promise to be an engaging discussion.

Subagio Sastrowardoyo (1924–1995) was a poet, short-story writer, essayist, and literary critic. During his writing career of more than 45 years, Subagio published a wide range of work but it was his poetry and his essays on poetry that have most served to enrich and expand discourse on modern Indonesian poetry. In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of his death, Lontar celebrates his life and work through readings, a discussion of his work, and the testimonies of people who were close to him.

More than anyone else, it has been individual translators who have, since colonial times, served to introduce Indonesian literature to the world. Without their combined work, the world would have a much more narrow view of Indonesia than it does have today. How did these translators first become involved in the field of Indonesian language and literature? What made them want to translate the works they have translated? What are some of the challenges they faced?

Over the years, Lontar has produced 24 documentary films on Indonesian writers under the rubric On the Record (OTR). More recently, to highlight younger and emerging authors, the foundation has produced numerous short films as well. This first film screen of the Lontar Literary Festival features a film about Selasih (1909–1995), the penname of Sariamin Ismail, a pioneer author who began to write in the colonial area and whose work depicted women under the dominance of a patriarchal culture. Meanwhile, Heru Joni Putra, from West Sumatra, and Ni Made Purnama Sari, from Bali, are both national award-winning poets.
