Born in Pacitan, East Java in 1961, Purbo Asmoro is able to trace his lineage back to at least six generations of Javanese dhalang. He is the first in his family however to be formally educated, holding a Master’s Degree in Performance Art from the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta, one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia. An instructor in the Pedalangan Department at the Institute of Indonesian Arts in Surakarta for over twenty years, Purbo Asmoro divides his time between teaching and an active performing career. He has both a dedicated, academic following and a broad-based, enthusiastic community of fans across Indonesia. Purbo Asmoro has conducted four major wayang tours to the USA over the last decade; performing in Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Houston, Dallas, Santa Fe, as well as at Cornell University, the University of Michigan, Wesleyan University, and Oberlin College. He has conducted multiple tours of the United Kingdom and France, and has performed in Japan, India, Bolivia, Austria, the Greek Islands, Thailand and Singapore.
