was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Williams College, Massachusetts. He is the author of several nonfiction books, including The Music ofthe Spheres and Pop Art. He regularly contributes criticism and travel essays to the New York Times, the Atlantic Monthly, Conde Nast Traveler, the American Scholar, and other American newspapers and magazines. From 1994-1997 he served as staff art critic at The New Yorker. He has lived in Indonesia since 1997.
